The Legend of HMS Aurora
A Research and Discovery of an Unknown Navy Chit
The discovery of a rare naval canteen voucher by the Numismatics Exonumia Scripophily Museum (NESM) represents a significant milestone in the study of mid-twentieth-century maritime and economic history. This artifact, a small military chit originally used for transactions within a warship’s canteen, serves as a physical witness to the turbulent political transitions that shaped modern China. The voucher features a detailed illustration of a cruiser, which, through meticulous archival cross-referencing with China Navy Monthly, Vol. 45, and various maritime databases, has been identified as the HMS Aurora. This vessel, an Arethusa-class light cruiser of the British Royal Navy, would eventually become the flagship of the Republic of China Navy as the Chung King/Chongqing (重慶號) and later serve the People’s Liberation Army Navy in several auxiliary capacities. The exonumia value of the voucher lies not only in its rarity but in the linguistic and monetary clues found on its obverse and reverse, which reflect the shift from Nationalist (Kuomintang) to Communist (People’s Liberation Army) control.
